Julian Chokkattu is a journalist and photographer. He currently is the reviews editor at WIRED, covering smartphones, tablets, wearables, electric scooters, and the broad tech landscape. He previously was the mobile and wearables editor at Digital Trends; he has also worked at TechCrunch, and New Jersey Advance Media.

Julian graduated from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, with a Bachelor of Arts in 2014, majoring in English and Journalism & Media Studies. 

Born in the U.S., he returned in 2004 after spending most of his childhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He developed an interest in photography during a trip to India in 2011. To grow his writing and photography skills, he joined Rutgers' independent newspaper, The Daily Targum, where he served as news editor from 2013 to 2014. He currently uses a Nikon Z6, but previously used the Nikon D7000.


The Oculus refers to a circular opening in a dome, more specifically the oculus in The Pantheon in Rome, which is a circular opening at the structure’s center. It is also known as the Devil’s Hole.
