Julian Chokkattu is a journalist and photographer. He is currently a Senior Editor for the Gear section at WIRED, covering smartphones and personal technology. He previously worked on the WIRED Reviews team as a senior editor for 6 years, reviewing everything from home office equipment to electric scooters. Before that, he was the mobile and wearables editor at Digital Trends, and he got his start in the tech media landscape after an internship at TechCrunch.

Julian graduated from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, with a Bachelor of Arts in 2014, majoring in English and Journalism & Media Studies. 

Born in the US, he spent his childhood in Sri Lanka, but returned in 2004. He developed an interest in photography during a trip to India in 2011. To grow his writing and photography skills, he joined Rutgers' independent newspaper, The Daily Targum, where he served as news editor from 2013 to 2014. He currently uses a Nikon Z6 III, but previously used the original Nikon Z6, and before that, the Nikon D7000.


The Oculus refers to a circular opening in a dome, more specifically the oculus in The Pantheon in Rome, which is a circular opening at the structure’s center. It is also known as the Devil’s Hole.
